With the arrival of the weekend, residents often end up staying indoors during the summer months, as a way to beat the heat. However this Sunday, they are in for a treat, as showers in some parts of the country bring respite from soaring temperatures.

The National Centre of Meteorology reported heavy to light rains in areas of Al Ain like Mezyad, Malaqit, Al Hiyar, Sa, Khatm Al Shiklah, Nahil, Al Faqa, Sweihan, Shwaib, Masakin and Um Ghaffa.

Heavy to moderate showers also took place in Sharjah's Madam, Al Bhaes, Al Ruwaidah, Khedera and Rafada areas.

Storm Centre also shared visuals of heavy rains lashing parts of Dubai-Al Ain road and Al Ain's Um Ghafa Road.

One video shows rains, along with strong gusts of winds blowing on an Al Ain road, as visibility drops due to dusty conditions and objects fly past.

Rains also hit Wadi Al Helo, bringing life to the green landscape of the areas nestled among mountains.

The rains, which started at around 1.30pm as per the NCM, are expected to continue until 7.30pm today. The showers are a result of convective cloud formation, which have come along with fresh to strong winds, causing blowing dust at a speed of 45 km/hr over some eastern and southern areas.

The Met also issued orange and yellow alerts in some parts of the country, warning residents of expected hazardous weather events and to be on the lookout incase of outdoor activities.

Abu Dhabi Police has urged drivers to exercise caution due to rainy weather conditions, and to adhere to the variable speed limits displayed on signs and electronic boards.

This is the not the first time this month that rains have hit the country. Residents first experienced the pleasant surprise on July 15, when rains hit some parts of the UAE, bringing some respite from the sweltering summer heat.

This was followed by heavy to moderate showers along with hail on July 16 in areas of Sharjah, Ras Al Khaimah and Ajman.

Just two days ago, Dubai residents experienced the first hail of this summer, accompanied by thunderstorm in some parts of the city.

Earlier today, red and yellow alerts of fog were issued by the met authority for the early morning hours in parts of Abu Dhabi.

The NCM had also said that the mercury is expected to reach a scorching 49ºC in Abu Dhabi’s Gasyoura and Mezaira. Dubai is forecast to hit 43ºC, while Abu Dhabi will see highs of 44ºC.
