Budapest Meeting and European Reactions

Ukrainian Response and Resistance

According to sources, the meeting between the US and Ukrainian presidents repeatedly escalated into a heated argument, with Trump"cursing constantly."

The sources added that Trump demanded that Zelensky hand over the entire Donbas region to Putin, and repeatedly repeated statements that the Russian leader had made to him in a phone conversation the day before.

Although Ukraine ultimately managed to convince Trump to support a freeze on the current front lines, the tense meeting demonstrated Trump's volatile stance on the outcome of the war in Ukraine and his willingness to support Putin's maximalist demands, the Financial Times writes.

During the meeting, Trump appeared to repeat many of Putin's statements verbatim, even when they contradicted his own recent remarks, according to European officials briefed on the meeting.

A European official told the Financial Times that Trump told Zelensky that he must make a deal or Ukraine would be destroyed.

The publication's source added that Trump told Zelensky that he was losing the war and warned:"If [Putin] wants to, he will destroy you."

At one point during the meeting, the US president threw away maps of the Ukrainian battlefield, an official familiar with the meeting said.

The White House and the Ukrainian presidential administration have not yet responded to requests from the Financial Times for comment on this information.

Trump told Fox News on Sunday that he was confident the war would be over, adding that Putin was"going to take something."

Trump's repeated echoes of Putin's rhetoric on Friday dashed hopes among many of Ukraine's allies in Europe that the US president could be persuaded to support Ukraine more strongly.

These hopes have been strengthened in recent weeks, as Trump has expressed frustration with Putin's refusal to actively participate in peace talks with Zelensky.

Three other European officials briefed on the White House discussions confirmed to the Financial Times that Trump spent much of the meeting preaching to Zelensky, repeating Putin's arguments for war and urging him to accept Russia's proposals.

One of the officials said that after the meeting,"Zelensky was in a very negative mood," adding that European leaders "are not optimistic, but are taking a pragmatic approach in planning their next steps."

In a statement released on Sunday, Zelensky said that"decisive action is needed from the United States, Europe, the G20 and G7 countries to end the war."
