Donald Trump will meet with Vladimir Putin in Budapest to discuss peace, the American president announced on his social media platform.
Trump announced the meeting after a phone call with the Russian president, but no date has been set. He wrote that they discussed at length the trade opportunities between Russia and the US that could be exploited once the war in Ukraine is over.
At the end of the conversation, they agreed that their highest-level advisors would meet next week. The US delegation will be led by Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and the members of the delegation will be named in the near future. The location for this meeting has not yet been determined.
This will be followed by the Trump-Putin meeting in Budapest, where, in the president's words,"we will see if we can end this inglorious war between Russia and Ukraine."
Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will meet in Washington on Friday, where they will discuss everything that the American and Russian presidents just discussed.
The idea that Hungary could be a suitable location for the two leaders to meet was already mentioned by the Russian press at the beginning of the year, when Vladimir Dzhabbarov, the first deputy chairman of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Federation Council, the upper house of the Russian parliament, discussed the matter. According to Dzhabbarov, Hungary is suitable because Viktor Orbán has good relations with both Putin and Trump. “The main task is to guarantee the security of both leaders,” he said.
Rumors about this had already surfaced before the Alaska summit. At that time, the American Fox News reported that Putin had originally wanted to hold the meeting in Hungary, which eventually took place in the United States.
After Alaska, Viktor Orbán himself said that the meeting was so great that another one was needed immediately. The Hungarian Prime Minister said at the time that Hungary “supports the further negotiation process, especially with regard to a second” such event.
On the day Orbán spoke about this, Politico reported that the White House had selected Budapest as the venue for the Trump-Putin-Zelensky three-way meeting. However, it is not yet known whether the Ukrainian president will be present at the Budapest summit that will now finally take place.
In an interview with Mandiner on Monday evening, Viktor Orbán also spoke about a possible meeting with Donald Trump soon, although he could not yet give a date. Reacting to the US president's statement, he commented:"Another great chance for peace. And it's only Thursday!"
Trump ended his post on a very optimistic note: “I think we made significant progress with today’s phone call.” The question is how much of a good news the image of Donald Trump, who seems friendly again towards Putin, means for the Ukrainian president, who is preparing to enter the White House on Friday.
