About half of the approximately 700 Marines arrived in Los Angeles on Monday evening, and the rest of the troops will enter the city on Tuesday, a US official told Reuters.
Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass said more than 100 people were arrested on Monday, but that most of the protesters were nonviolent.
The Marines will protect federal property and personnel alongside Guard troops, the U.S. Northern Command said. About 1,700 Guard soldiers were in the Los Angeles metropolitan area on Monday, with more troops on the way.
Trump justified his decision to deploy military troops to Los Angeles by describing the protests as violent, a characterization that Newsom and Bass said was"grossly exaggerated."
