What happened

Two gunmen killed at least 15 people and injured 40 more at a Hanukkah celebration on Australia's popular Bondi Beach in Sydney at around 6.45pm (local time).

Police shot and killed one attacker and arrested the other, who is in critical condition.

The attackers

Two men in black shirts started firing with a sporting rifle and shotgun from a footbridge leading to the beach.

The younger of the pair has been named as Naveed Akram, while the identity of the older gunman is unknown.

One bystander, named on Australian TV as 43-year-old Ahmed al Ahmed, tackled and disarmed one of the gunmen.

Several improvised explosive devices were found in one of the suspect's cars.

The victims

Only one victim has been identified so far: British-born Rabbi Eli Schlanger, an assistant rabbi at Chabad of Bondi.

A child was also among the dead, according to New South Wales' health minister.

An Israeli citizen was killed, Israel's foreign ministry said.

Reaction

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the attack an act of antisemitic terrorism that struck at the heart of the nation.

King Charles said he and Queen Camilla were"appalled and saddened by the most dreadful antisemitic terrorist attack".

Keir Starmer said he was being updated on the"appalling attack", while police in London pledged to step up security at Jewish sites.

US secretary of state Marco Rubio said the United States"strongly condemns the terrorist attack in Australia targeting a Jewish celebration. Antisemitism has no place in this world".
