The EU is working on"pretty precise plans" for the potential deployment of its military in Ukraine as part of post-war security guarantees that would have the full support of the US, Ursula von der Leyen said in an interview with the Financial Times.
She announced that she had a"clear roadmap" for their deployment and stressed that "security guarantees are paramount and absolutely crucial". In her words,"work on the agreement that we reached at the White House is progressing very well".
"President Donald Trump assured us that there would be an American presence as part of the support," Von der Leyen noted, and was adamant that"this has been repeatedly confirmed."
Kiev has long demanded clear security guarantees from its Western allies as part of any agreement to end the war, including troops on the ground, likely to include tens of thousands of Europeans backed by the United States, a deal agreed at a meeting between Trump, Zelensky and senior European leaders last month.
The Elysee Palace confirmed that a meeting of the Coalition of the Willing will take place on Thursday to discuss the next steps for peace in Ukraine. It will be co-chaired by French President Emmanuel Macron and British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, and will be held in a hybrid format and will focus on guarantees for Ukraine's security. Zelensky is also expected to attend.
