Questioning Government Response and Funding

At least 82 people, including 28 children, lost their lives following a flash flood in Texas.

According to the New York Times, the Texas floods may go down as the deadliest flood disaster in 100-year history and the second deadliest weather event in history. Approximately 113 people have died from floods annually in the last 10 years.

  • These floods are on a similar scale to major disasters such as the 1927 Mississippi flood and Hurricane Katrina in 2005.

CRITICAL WARNING SYSTEM LACK

Kerr County declined to install an early warning system in 2017, with sirens and river-level monitoring devices delayed due to budget constraints. Experts say many lives could have been saved if it had been in place.

Telephone text message warnings were late for some residents or were ignored. The 'flash flood warning' that came out during the night was taken lightly by many.

10 GIRLS WANTED

Authorities are still searching for 10 girls and a camp counselor who disappeared from a Christian summer camp called Camp Mystic.

Images released by AFP and AP showed the devastation left by flooding in the area surrounding Camp Mystic, on the banks of the Guadalupe River in Hunt, Texas. A mobile home was completely destroyed at Louise Hays Park on the river in Kerrville, while Texas Department of Public Safety officers searched along the river.

There are currently 41 people missing statewide, and Texas Governor Greg Abbott has warned that number could rise even more.

EMERGENCY DECLARATION FROM TRUMP

US President Donald Trump announced that he signed a"Major Disaster Declaration" for Kerr County, the county most affected by the disaster."The necessary steps have been taken to ensure that our heroic first responders can quickly access all necessary resources," he said in a post on Truth Social, adding:"These families are experiencing an unimaginable tragedy. So many have lost their lives, and there are still many missing."

Trump plans to visit the flood zone on Friday.

HEART-BREAKING IMAGES

Wet mattresses in dormitories, teddy bears and construction equipment dragged outside show the extent of the disaster. Despite the difficult conditions, rescue teams rescued more than 850 people in 36 hours.

"We still have people coming in here looking for their loved ones. We've been able to find a few people, but most are still missing," said Bobby Templeton, superintendent of the Ingram Independent School District.

THE RIVER RISES 8 METERS IN 45 MINUTES

Kerr County, particularly around the Guadalupe River, was the hardest hit. The sudden rainfall caused the river level to rise about 25 feet in just 45 minutes. Rain continued Saturday in areas outside San Antonio, where flash flood warnings remained in place.

According to the New York Times, Julian Ryan, 27, took shelter in the bedroom of their trailer home in Ingram with his mother, fiancée Christinia Wilson and their children, ages 6 and 13 months, when the surging waters of the Guadalupe River woke them from their sleep.

"The water just started pouring in and we had to fight to get the door closed so that more water wouldn't get in," Wilson told local outlet KHOU.

Julian Ryan died after saving his family from deadly floodwaters in Texas on July 4, 2025.

He had already placed his two children on a floating bed when the bedroom door suddenly flew open and the room filled with water. Ryan made a radical decision to save his family.

HE BROKE THE GLASS, THE ARTERIAL IN HIS ARM WAS SLICED

The brave father smashed his bedroom window with his fist, severing an artery in his arm in the process and almost completely severing his arm, according to his family.

His fiancée, Wilson, said she called 911 multiple times during the incident, but no emergency crews were able to get to their home in time.

As Ryan bled to death in the floodwaters in his bedroom, he told his family:"I'm sorry, I'm not going to make it. I love you all."

The water continued to rise, eventually reaching a point where it ripped the trailer in half. The family managed to escape and survive.

'HE WAS THE BEST FATHER'

"He was the best dad and always had such a good time. He would never hesitate to help people no matter what it took," Wilson said.

A GoFundMe campaign that has raised more than $25,000 includes the following statement:

  • "Julian gave his life for his family and left us a true hero. While his family is eternally grateful for his sacrifice, they are shattered by this loss."

Ryan's body was found hours after waters began to recede in Kerr County.

The shocking floods have so far claimed the lives of 59 people, including 15 children. Twenty-two girls are still reported missing, including students at Camp Mystic, a Christian summer camp.

DRAWN 32 KM AND RESCUE FROM A TREE

On the other hand, a 22-year-old young woman was miraculously rescued after being swept away for 32 kilometers along the river in the floods. The woman, who was swept away by flash flood waters at 4 a.m. from the camp she was staying in Texas, was found four hours later clinging to a tree, according to local broadcaster KENS 5.

DRAG BETWEEN CARS

A woman who was swept away by floodwaters through four dams managed to survive by dodging debris such as cars and refrigerators.

An eyewitness named Carl said he heard cries for help when he went out to his garden at around 8am. He saw the woman clinging to a giant cypress tree near the Lion's Park Dam.

Since emergency calls were not connecting, Carl quickly stopped a police car and called for help.

Two rescue boats were sent to the scene and struggled with the strong currents to reach the tree. In the meantime, the water level had receded considerably, leaving the woman stranded approximately 4 meters above the water surface. She was eventually rescued by jumping into the boats from the top of the tree.
