Former US Vice President Dick Cheney has died at the age of 84, US media reported Tuesday, citing a statement from his family.

Cheney was the 46th Vice President of the United States during the two terms of Republican President George W. Bush between 2001 and 2009, a period marked by major events, most notably the invasion of Iraq.

But he surprised Americans in the last presidential election in 2024 when he expressed his support for Democratic candidate Kamala Harris, considering that Donald Trump was not qualified to assume the presidency.

He justified his support for a candidate from the other camp by saying, “We must put the country’s interest above partisan divisions in order to defend our constitution.”

Dick Cheney was George Bush's partner in two successful election campaigns, and the most influential vice president in the history of the White House.

Major events marked that period, most notably the invasion of Iraq and the “war on terror,” and economic changes.

Dick Cheney died from complications resulting from pneumonia and heart problems, according to his family.
