BANGKOK — Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa defended Thailand’s communication strategy amid border tensions with Cambodia, insisting the country has gained significant international support while maintaining bilateral dialogue approaches.

Accuracy Over Speed in Communication

Speaking to Matichon-Khaosod media on July 31, Sangiampongsa said that while information speed may not meet public expectations, accuracy remains paramount alongside timeliness.

“Some matters remain unclear and unconfirmed. As a government, we must wait for readiness and correct facts. We cannot operate like online media that provides information without accountability,” he said.

“We’re trying to improve communication, but I must emphasize we prioritize accurate information over being fast but wrong.”

Thailand Gains International Support

Sangiampongsa said he met UN representatives and condemned Cambodia from the start, following both incidents where Thai soldiers stepped on landmines. He explained the Thai-Cambodia clashes to international partners, noting Cambodia targeted hospitals and civilian communities.

“The international community is aware of all information, so I confirm that on the global stage, we have a significant advantage over Cambodia,” he stated.

Diplomatic Procedures Defended

The Foreign Minister said his ministry follows proper diplomatic procedures rather than engaging in media attacks, which may cause public misunderstanding and concerns about delays. However, all actions prioritize national interests.

Regarding the planned August 1 visit by military attachés to border areas after the ceasefire, Maris acknowledged that finding concrete evidence of ceasefire violations may be difficult. The ministry coordinated with the military to provide information for international presentation.

Evidence of Civilian Targeting

The delegation will examine damage at Phanom Dong Rak Hospital, gas stations, and civilian homes located dozens of kilometers from the border, proving Cambodia deliberately targeted innocent Thai civilians.

Sangiampongsa dismissed concerns about the delayed diplomatic tour compared to Cambodia’s earlier action, saying facts remain facts regardless of timing. The delay resulted from safety concerns for officials, given uncertainty about potential ceasefire violations and newly planted landmines violating the Ottawa Convention.

Close Government-Military Coordination

The Foreign Minister emphasized close government-military coordination, citing negotiations led by Acting Prime Minister Phumtham Wechayachai with Cambodian Prime Minister Hun Manet in Putrajaya, Malaysia. Deputy Defense Minister General Nattapol Nakpanich coordinated military information throughout, including ceasefire agreement details.

Bilateral Approach Maintained

Thailand maintains its position that problems with Cambodia must be resolved through bilateral discussions, as demonstrated in Malaysia where Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim served as mediator but Thailand requested witness status only.

“We didn’t allow any third country interference. Everything remains based on national interests,” Sangiampongsa concluded.
