On Wednesday, Ukrainian President Zelensky and German Chancellor Merz held a digital meeting with several European leaders and Donald Trump.

This comes ahead of Trump meeting Vladimir Putin in Alaska on Friday.

The purpose of Wednesday's meeting was to put pressure on Russia and prepare for possible peace negotiations and other things.

Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson participated in the meeting.

"It was a hopeful meeting. There is great agreement between all countries at the meeting, including the US, that only Ukraine can negotiate about Ukraine," he writes in a comment.

Zelenskyy: Three leaders should meet

"Important decisions" may be made during the meeting between Trump and Putin on Friday, Merz said at the press conference.

– We Europeans must do what we can to set the course for this meeting in the right way.

Zelenskyy says that punitive measures must be imposed on Russia if it does not agree to a ceasefire.

At the same time, he emphasized that issues concerning Ukraine should be discussed with Ukraine.

That there should be a meeting between three leaders on Friday.

– There should be no talks without Ukraine, he says.

Europe has presented a five-point list of demands to Trump ahead of the meeting. These are:

  • Ukraine must be at the negotiating table during all future meetings with Putin.
  • A ceasefire must be the first step before any negotiations begin.
  • Recognizing occupied territories as Russian is not an option
  • Ukrainian forces must be free to defend their country's self-determination, with European support.
  • Broader negotiations should be part of a"transatlantic strategy based on supporting Ukraine and putting pressure on Russia".

"Trump supports ceasefire"

Zelensky also says that Trump supports a ceasefire. French President Macron also made the same statement earlier in the day.

– Joint pressure on Russia is needed, sanctions are needed and there should be a message that if Russia does not agree to a ceasefire in Alaska, that principle should work, says Zelenskyj.

Zelensky has also told Trump and European leaders that “Putin is bluffing – he is trying to push forward along the entire front line.”

– Putin is also bluffing when he says he doesn't care about the sanctions and that they don't work. In fact, the sanctions are very effective, and they threaten the economy of the Russian military, he says.

Ahead of Wednesday's meeting, Zelensky said that Ukraine will not give up land in Donbass in exchange for a ceasefire.
