“The technicians of our armed forces have been clear, concise and very professional in their calculations: according to their estimates, Spain will have to allocate approximately 2%, precisely 2.1% of GDP for the purchase and maintenance of all the personnel, all the equipment and all the infrastructure required by the Alliance to face with our capabilities the threats and challenges” that we face, therefore “for the Spanish government it makes no sense to spend 5% of GDP” on defense. This was stated by the Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez in an institutional statement from the Moncloa Palace in which he announced the reaching of an agreement with NATO regarding the percentage of defense spending.
