Previously, three fatalities had been reported. A spokesperson for the rescue teams in the Portuguese capital said there were also 18 injured. There was initially no information about the nationalities of the victims. The cause of the accident was also not yet known. Television images showed the badly damaged train cars from which rescue workers were extracting people.

Portugal's President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, also announced on his office's website that several people had died. Numerous others were also injured. Carlos Moedas, the mayor of the Portuguese capital, told reporters:"It is a tragic day for our city. Lisbon is in mourning!" Moedas is a politician from the conservative-liberal Partido Social Democrata.
Famous tourist attraction
The"Ascensor da Glória" railway is one of Lisbon's most famous tourist attractions and was first in operation in the 19th century. It is popular with locals and visitors alike, as it connects the lower city of Baixa with the high-rise district of Bairro Alto, known for its nightlife.
