Minister Alexandre de Moraes , of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) , determined this Tuesday, 25, the monitoring of former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL) full time by the Penal Police of the Federal District.
The former president is under house arrest in Brasília. According to the ruling, police teams must remain on standby at the address.
Moraes uses the upcoming trial of the coup plot as justification. Bolsonaro and seven other defendants from the"crucial core" of the coup plot will begin their trial next week in the First Chamber of the Supreme Federal Court (STF).
The ruling also mentions the draft asylum application found on the former president's cell phone, which raised fears about the possibility of his escape. The defense denies that Bolsonaro ever considered leaving Brazil.
In the document, addressed to the President of Argentina, Javier Milei, Bolsonaro states that he is “persecuted for essentially political reasons and crimes.”
Moraes states in the decision that, “considering the evidence collected by the Federal Police,” as well as the “renewed risk of escape,” “the requested monitoring measures are absolutely necessary and appropriate, without any worsening of the defendant’s situation.”
The Attorney General's Office (PGR) was in favor of increased policing. In an opinion submitted to the Supreme Federal Court, Attorney General Paulo Gonet defended"real-time monitoring" of the precautionary measures imposed on the former president,"taking care to ensure that they do not intrude on the defendant's home, nor disrupt his neighborhood relations."
