247 - The governor of Goiás, Ronaldo Caiado (União), pre-candidate for the Presidency of the Republic, said this Tuesday (2), in an interview with journalists during an agenda in Belo Horizonte, that his first act as president will be to grant a “broad, general and unrestricted amnesty” to those convicted of the acts of January 8, 2023. The information is from CNN Brasil .
"I have already made it very clear and I reaffirm my position here that my first act as President of the Republic will be to promote a broad, general, and unrestricted amnesty for all those who committed the January 8th uprising. And from then on, I will do as Juscelino Kubitscheck did: granting amnesty to all, pacifying Brazil, and being a great statesman, as he was," Caiado declared. The governor's statement refers to President Juscelino Kubitscheck, who granted amnesty to military personnel who attempted a coup in the 1950s. However, the same military personnel attempted a coup again in 1964, this time successfully.
The governor's remarks came on the same day that the trial of Jair Bolsonaro (PL) began. When asked about the matter, Caiado responded:"What's up to us citizens is to await the decision that will come from the trials of these eight people who are being tried, which began today."
According to the pre-candidate, the debate on amnesty will be inevitable in the 2026 elections."As for the future of this issue, that will be a moment of debate in the political landscape for the 2026 elections, where this matter will be on the agenda of how we want to pacify Brazil from now on," he stated.
Meeting with Romeu Zema
Still in Belo Horizonte, Caiado met with Minas Gerais Governor Romeu Zema (Novo), also a presidential candidate. The two had breakfast together before heading off on separate agendas.
"I believe that we, as highly regarded governors, will each show the Brazilian people what we think about Brazil's governance, and the public will pay attention to what wasn't just talk, but to reality," said Caiado.
