The civil war, which lasted 14 years, led to one of the biggest migration crises in the world. Namely, in 2021, at the height of the war, 6.8 million people fled the country, which is a third of its population.

More than half, or 3.74 million refugees, were in neighboring Turkey, 840 thousand in Lebanon and 672 thousand in Jordan. After the war ended, many of them, as well as the Syrian diaspora, are considering returning to Syria.

According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), more than 782 thousand people returned from abroad during the last year, namely 170 thousand in Aleppo, 134 thousand in Homs and 124 thousand in rural areas around Damascus.

Several countries, including Austria, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, Greece, Italy, Sweden and Great Britain, announced shortly after the fall of the regime that Syrians would be denied asylum. In addition, asylum was questioned for Syrians who submitted an asylum request shortly before the said decision.

The number of requests for asylum in the members of the European Union, and Norway and Switzerland, during the first half of this year decreased by 23 percent compared to the first half of last year. The reason for this is that the number of requests submitted by Syrian citizens has decreased by two-thirds. For the first time in the last 10 years, they are no longer the most numerous asylum seekers in Europe.

Apart from the 782 thousand who returned from abroad, according to the IOM, 1.8 million internally displaced Syrians returned to their homes last year, namely 471 thousand in Aleppo, 460 thousand in Idlib and 314 thousand in Hama. This means that a total of 2.6 million people have returned. However, there are still six million internally displaced, Al Jazeera reported.
