The Israeli military carried out extensive airstrikes on targets in the Yemeni capital Sanaa, which is controlled by the Houthi rebel group, according to news agencies. The attacks were said to be a direct response to Friday's incident when the Houthi rebels fired a ballistic missile at Israel.

According to the Houthi-run Al Masirah TV station and local residents, powerful explosions were heard at several strategic locations in the city. Residents reported that the attacks targeted areas near the presidential complex, areas believed to host missile bases, and power plants.

Targeted military complex

The Israeli military confirmed the operation and detailed the targets. In an official statement, it said it had hit a military complex that includes the presidential palace, two power plants and a major fuel depot. According to the Israeli side, these facilities were used by the Houthis to provide logistical support for their military operations.

The Houthis have repeatedly launched rockets and drones towards Israeli territory, but most of the missiles have been intercepted by anti-aircraft systems.

A senior Israeli air force official said Friday's incident was the first instance of a ballistic missile being fired from Yemen. He said the missile likely carried multiple submunitions designed to detonate on impact, indicating the growing technological capability and audacity of the Iran-backed armed group.

More examples

The incident is part of a broader pattern that began after Israel's military operation against Hamas in Gaza in October 2023. The Houthis, who control northwestern Yemen, have launched a campaign of attacks on international shipping in the Red Sea in solidarity with the Palestinians, severely disrupting global trade routes. They have also frequently fired rockets and drones at Israeli territory, but most of the missiles have been successfully intercepted by anti-aircraft systems.

Israel has repeatedly responded to these threats with attacks on areas under Houthi control, including the strategically important port of Hodeidah.
