Jakarta, CNBC Indonesia - California National Guard Troops were deployed to Los Angeles on Sunday amid growing protests against President Donald Trump's aggressive immigration enforcement policies.

Quoting Reuters, California Governor Gavin Newsom considered the decision to be unlawful and politically motivated.

Demonstrations across the city grew increasingly tense over the weekend, with protesters clashing with police, throwing projectiles and setting several driverless cars on fire.

The Los Angeles Police Department declared some demonstrations"unlawful assemblies" and made dozens of arrests. Officers on horses were deployed to control the crowds, while protesters blocked the 101 Freeway and chanted,"Shame on you!"

Governor Newsom condemned the troop deployment, calling it an abuse of state authority."This is the act of a dictator, not a president," he wrote on social media quoted Monday (6/9/2025).

In an interview, he confirmed plans to sue the Trump administration, accusing it of inciting the riot for political gain.

President Trump defended the troop deployment, saying,"Don't let these thugs get away with it," and calling the protesters a "violent mob of insurrectionists."

He warned of a harsh response, saying,"They spit, we hit."

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass also criticized the federal response."I don't want people to be thrust into a mess that I believe the administration has created that is completely unnecessary," she said.

Critics, including immigration advocacy groups, say the raids were designed to provoke confrontation. Vanessa Cárdenas of America's Voice accused the Trump administration of"intentionally provoking conflict to justify an abuse of power."

Meanwhile, Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum responded by saying that this phenomenon will not be solved by raids or violence. It will be solved by sitting together and working on comprehensive reforms.

Trump cited law to justify the federal government's activation of the National Guard, though legal experts note that it typically requires coordination with state governors and limits the military's involvement in domestic law enforcement.

In response, about 300 National Guard troops were sent to protect federal property and personnel, according to U.S. Northern Command. An additional 500 Marines were deployed at Camp Pendleton. Homeland Security officials said the National Guard presence was to ensure the safety of peaceful protesters and law enforcement.
