Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Tuesday called on Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán to stop blocking Ukraine's accession process to the European Union. At an event organized by Euronews, he described it as a"specific kind of support" for Russian President Vladimir Putin, TASR reports.
- Zelenskyy called on Orbán to stop blocking Ukraine's entry into the EU.
- Ukraine is seeking membership in the European Union from February 2022.
- Orbán is blocking the processes of both Ukraine and Moldova.
Zelensky: Ukraine protects all of Europe from Russia
"We are fighting for our survival and we would very much like the Hungarian prime minister to support us, or at least not block us," Zelensky said."I don't think I have anything to offer Viktor Orbán. I think Viktor Orbán has something to offer Ukraine, which protects all of Europe from Russia," he said.
The Ukrainian president pointed out that Kiev has not received any support from Orbán since the beginning of the war."We would not want Viktor to support Russia, because blocking Ukraine in the EU is a very specific support from Viktor for Putin. This is definitely not good. That is my subjective opinion," he explained.
Trump supports Ukraine's EU membership, says Zelensky
Zelenskyy explained that he had also discussed Hungary's proposal to open the accession process with US President Donald Trump, who, according to him, expressed support for Ukraine's membership in the EU. According to him, the White House chief understands that this is the will of the Ukrainian people.
Ukraine applied for membership in the European Union in February 2022, shortly after the start of the Russian invasion. The Hungarian prime minister did not veto the opening of accession negotiations with Ukraine the following year. However, he is blocking the launch of negotiations on so-called “clusters”, i.e. groups of thematically divided accession chapters. The veto also applies to the accession process of Moldova, which is paired with Ukraine in this matter.
