More than half of Brazilians consider the request by the President of the United States, Donald Trump , to end the criminal action against former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) in the Supreme Federal Court (STF) when he announced 50% tariffs on Brazilian products to be wrong.

The data was collected by the Datafolha Institute and released this Thursday, the 30th. For 57% of respondents,"blackmail," the term the opposition has used to refer to the case, is wrong. However, 36% believe the American is right. Another 7% of respondents did not respond.

The survey interviewed Brazilians on the 29th and 30th, the day the tariff hike was made official, with Trump backtracking on almost 700 products.

In the letter sent to Lula announcing the tariffs on July 9, Trump justified the level of the tariff, the highest among sanctioned countries, as a response to Brazil's treatment of Bolsonaro.

"I have known and dealt with former President Jair Bolsonaro and have greatly respected him, as have most other leaders. The way Brazil treated former President Bolsonaro, a highly respected leader throughout the world, including by the United States, during his tenure, is an international disgrace. This trial should not be taking place. It is a witch hunt that must end IMMEDIATELY!" Trump wrote at the time.

Another question posed by the survey reveals a divided country. When asked whether they believe Bolsonaro is being persecuted and wronged, as Trump claims, who has called the former president a"witch hunt," 50% deny it, while 45% believe so. Five percent say they don't know.
