Ukraine’s Prime Minister Yulia Svyrydenko on Sunday showed the destruction inside the Cabinet of Ministers building after Russia launched its biggest-ever aerial attack on the country, striking the heart of Kyiv and killing four people.
“For the first time since the start of the full-scale invasion, the Russians hit the Cabinet of Ministers building, where our entire team works,” Svyrydenko said.
“Fortunately, no one was hurt. The fire has been extinguished. I thank the rescuers. Russian terror will not stop the government’s work. We will restore the damage. But Ukrainian lives cannot be restored.”
Emergency services said more than 44 people were injured in the overnight strikes, which also damaged high-rise residential buildings in Kyiv. A Kyiv Post reporter, residing in the city center, saw the roof of the Cabinet building in flames as smoke rose over the capital.
Svyrydenko said the attack showed Moscow’s true intentions. “It is obvious that Russia does not want peace,” she said.
She called on Ukraine’s allies to step up support, urging more air defense systems ahead of winter and tighter sanctions against Russia.
“I appeal to our partners and all states of the world to turn disappointment with Russia’s actions into effective help for Ukraine – not for the government building, but for protecting our people across the country,” she said.
“It is time to act. Ukraine needs more air defenses to protect our skies and energy infrastructure, especially with winter approaching. Strengthen sanctions on Russia to limit the resources for its war machine. This is all possible – the capability is in your hands.”
President Volodymyr Zelensky said the assault would only prolong the war. Moscow, now in its fourth year of full-scale war, continues to press hardline conditions for ending the fighting despite US efforts to broker peace.
