Swimming in the Seine is now allowed for the first time in 102 years

On Saturday morning, the first swimmers could legally dive into the Seine in Paris for the first time since 1923.

With some exceptions, swimming in the Seine has been prohibited since 1923 due to high levels of pollution in the water and danger to traffic on the river.

On Saturday morning, however, three areas opened for summer swimming, to the delight of Parisians and tourists.

In recent years, French authorities have spent over 16 billion kroner cleaning up the river, initially so that it could be used during swimming exercises in last year's Olympics.
