The first explosions were heard late Wednesday night and the attack continued throughout much of the night. At least 19 people, including four children, have been killed, local authorities say.
Total fired Russia 629 drones and missiles, according to the Ukrainian Air Force. This is the second highest number since the war of invasion began, reports TT. Several projectiles were aimed at Kiev, and some also landed in the central parts of the capital - something that has only happened a few times.
EU building damaged
Up to 100 buildings were damaged, according to Kiev's military administration. Including the building for the EU Advisory Mission in Ukraine, writes BBC.
"I am appalled by the drone and missile attack on Kiev, which killed men, women and children," said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in a statement.
After speaking with US President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday, von der Leyen is urging Russian leader Putin to come to the negotiating table.
"We must secure a just and lasting peace for Ukraine with strong and clear security guarantees," she writes in a post on X.
Starmer's anger: Sabotaging hope for peace
The British consulate was also damaged in the attack and the Russian ambassador in London has been summoned to the country's Foreign Ministry.
