Porto Sant'Elpidio (Italy) – Austrian extreme athlete Felix Baumgartner has died: The 56-year-old died in a paragliding accident in Porto Sant'Elpidio, Italy, on Thursday, according to several Italian media outlets.
Baumgartner was reportedly paragliding along the Adriatic coast when, for reasons that are still unclear, he lost control of his aircraft. He apparently took off from Fermo around 3:30 p.m. A tourist witnessed the crash and alerted emergency services.
Baumgartner fell into the pool at the Le Mimose campsite, where he landed on a woman. She was injured in the incident and required medical treatment. According to initial media reports, Baumgartner suffered cardiac arrest while in mid-air.
Around 3 p.m. on Thursday, Baumgartner posted a photo on his Instagram profile showing a small camp. He captioned it:"Too much wind."
The Austrian rose to worldwide fame in 2012 with a jump from the stratosphere. At the time, he jumped from a height of around 39 kilometers and became the first person to break the sound barrier.
