Legal Process and Implementation

The Supreme Federal Court sentenced former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) to 27 years and 3 months in prison in connection with the coup plot. The trial, which concluded this Thursday, the 11th, also sentenced all the other seven defendants who make up the crucial nucleus of the criminal organization that attempted the coup d'état.

The outcome of the trial, the first conviction of a former president for attempted coup, was the subject of discussion among columnists at Estadão.

See what they said:

Carolina Brígido: Supreme Court throws cold water on Bolsonaro's plan to pardon

Columnist Carolina Brígido analyzes that the Supreme Court sent several messages with the ruling. The most important, she says, is that the Court is willing to punish those who attack democracy, despite sanctions from other countries and political pressure.

"Another message throws cold water on Jair Bolsonaro's plan to be pardoned in the future. Moraes and Dino categorically stated that crimes against unbreakable clauses of the Federal Constitution cannot be subject to amnesty from the National Congress or a pardon from the President of the Republic," he writes.

Ricardo Corrêa: Bolsonaro was convicted of the coup he always preached

Columnist Ricardo Côrrea states that Bolsonaro has been preaching and practicing actions to destabilize democracy for three decades.

“The coup, which continues even amid the trial that condemns him, even with the threat of the use of American military force, appears incapable of preventing a destiny that Bolsonaro has always strived for,” he analyzes.

Franscico Leali also returns to the beginning of Bolsonaro's political career to analyze the conviction."The ineligible politician is now also convicted. Among the first scribbles drawing a bomb to explode back in the 1980s, an act he always denied, by 2025 the former Army captain had climbed the ladder to the Planalto Palace," he writes.

Fabiano Lana: It's time to calm down the social turmoil and Moraes should end the investigations

Columnist Fabiano Lana writes that Bolsonaro was convicted of something he once publicly wished for Brazil: a dictatorship. He states that there is nothing to celebrate, as centuries have passed and the country has not been able to mature institutionally, with yet another former president in jail.

Lana assesses that Bolsonaro's conviction will always be controversial."Right or wrong, isn't it time to try to calm the social turmoil? The first step should come from the Supreme Federal Court. It's up to Justice Alexandre de Moraes to conclude his investigations, which are contributing to the country's perpetual state of tension. It's up to the now-victorious forces not to gloat. After all, the wheel of history turns," he concludes.
