An aid flotilla will set off from Barcelona on Sunday, aiming to open the Gaza humanitarian corridor and break the"illegal" Israeli blockade, organizers said. Dozens of activists, including Swedish climate activist Greta Thunberg, as well as members of parliament from various European countries and other public figures, will be on board the ships. They did not say how many ships will set off.

According to the organizer, Global Sumud Flotilla, more ships will depart from Tunisia and other Mediterranean ports on September 4. In parallel, protests are planned in 44 countries in solidarity with the Palestinians.

Organizers are calling it a historic event that “surpasses all previous attempts.” However, Israel has twice prevented similar missions from reaching Gaza, in June and July, and has detained and deported participants, including Thunberg.

The flotilla is expected to arrive in the war-torn zone in mid-September.
