Donald Trump called Venezuelan opposition leader María Corina Machado to congratulate her on her Nobel Peace Prize, according to people familiar with the matter, despite speculation that he would be outraged at not receiving the award himself.

In a social media post, Machado dedicated the award to the US president and the Venezuelan people. He praised Trump's resolute support. He echoed his statement on his own account.
White House spokespersons did not immediately respond to requests for comment. Machado also did not respond.
Trump has demanded that Venezuelan dictator Nicolás Maduro step down and recognize as the legitimate winner of last year's Venezuelan elections an opposition candidate supported by Machado, after Maduro blocked her from running.
“We are on the threshold of victory and today, more than ever, we count on President Trump, the people of the United States, the people of Latin America, and the democratic nations of the world as our main allies in achieving freedom and democracy,” Machado said in a post on X.
