Indian Response

According to a document published on White House website This is the first application of so-called secondary sanctions by the US against a country that, according to Washington, indirectly supports the Russian military machine, warns CNN.

"India currently directly or indirectly imports crude oil from the Russian Federation," the executive order said, calling the imposition of an additional 25% tariff"necessary and appropriate."

The new tariffs affect a wide range of Indian exports and represent a significant escalation in trade tensions between the US and India, the world's fifth-largest economy.

The new 25% tariff is directly related to Russian energy resources and will take effect in 21 days. Another 25% tariff that Trump announced earlier goes into effect on Thursday.

Trump has previously lashed out at India on social media."India not only buys huge amounts of Russian oil - they resell much of it on the open market for a profit. They don't care how many people are being killed in Ukraine by the Russian war machine," he wrote.

In the executive order, Trump said he reached the decision on the tariffs based on additional information from senior officials about the Russian government's actions in Ukraine.
