It has already been reported that a meeting between US President Donald Trump and Putin is planned in Budapest to discuss ending the war in Ukraine. When exactly this will happen is not yet known, and it is not clear exactly how Putin plans to get to the Hungarian capital.
"We cannot guarantee that an independent Polish court will not order the government to land such a hypothetical plane to hand over a suspect to trial in The Hague," Sikorski told Radio Rodzina.
All of Hungary's neighbors, except Serbia, have suspended regular air traffic with Russia, but may consider allowing the plane carrying the Russian president to pass through their airspace. Poland does not share a border with Hungary.
Bulgarian Foreign Minister Georgy Georgiev said on Monday that Putin's plane could be granted the right to fly over Bulgaria on its way to Hungary, making one possible flight route from Moscow to Budapest over the Black Sea, Bulgaria and Serbia.
The ICC accuses Putin of abducting and deporting children and minors from Russian-occupied territories in Ukraine to Russia. It issued an arrest warrant for him in March 2023. Therefore, countries that have signed the ICC statute should detain Putin.
Hungary announced in April that it plans to withdraw from the ICC, and its parliament approved the decision in May. However, the withdrawal will take effect only a year after the official announcement, meaning Hungary will still be legally obligated to arrest Putin if he visits the country. However, Hungary has already said it has no plans to detain the Kremlin’s master.
Sikorski admitted that Putin could hypothetically avoid European Union (EU) territory until he reached Hungary by flying over Turkey, the sea, Montenegro and Serbia. However, Serbia and Montenegro are also members of the ICC.
