Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen said she supports the idea of providing Ukraine with a reparations loan, despite conclusions of the EU leaders' summit about uncertainty in plans to attract Russian immobilized assets in Belgium as the basis for such a loan. This is reported by Radio Liberty .
"I didn't see any alternative, and the idea of letting Russia pay for the damages caused to Ukraine is the only way forward. Of course, there are some technical questions that need to be answered and there are many details that we need to work out, but above all, this is a political decision and a political choice," she said.
Frederiksen explained that she considers it best to approve the decision before Christmas, that is, December 24,"so that we can ensure financing for Ukraine in the coming years."
"I know that some colleagues find this path forward more difficult than I do. And we have to solve the problems, but... the alternative is not to let Russia win this war, and not to ask all the Europeans to pay for Russia. So we need to solve the technical issues," the prime minister added.
Reparation loan for Ukraine
It was previously reported that the European Union plans to cover Ukraine's financial needs for the next two years and will develop mechanisms for using frozen Russian assets in Europe. It was noted that these funds should remain frozen until Russia ends the war and compensates Ukraine for the damages caused.
