RIO – The government of the United States, of President Donald Trump, accuses Minister Alexandre de Moraes of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) of censoring supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro (PL) and says that “the human rights situation in Brazil worsened throughout the year” under the administration of the President (PT).
The, in an annual report from the State Department on the situation of human rights and political freedoms in Brazil.
The Itamaraty and the Supreme Federal Court have not yet commented on the content of the report.
According to the report, Brazilian courts “have taken broad and disproportionate measures to undermine freedom of expression and internet freedom.”
"The government undermined democratic debate by restricting access to online content, disproportionately suppressing the speech of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro, as well as journalists and elected officials, often in secret proceedings without due process guarantees. The government also suppressed politically unfavorable speech, claiming it constituted 'hate speech,' a vague term unrelated to international human rights law," the document states.
Performance of Minister Alexandre de Moraes
The text also cites Supreme Court Justice Alexandre de Moraes when discussing censorship of freedom of expression. According to the U.S. department's report,"decisions by the Supreme Federal Court (STF) have restricted the freedom of expression of individuals deemed to be violating the law prohibiting anti-democratic expression."
“Court records reveal that Minister Alexandre de Moraes personally ordered the suspension of more than 100 user profiles on the X platform (formerly Twitter), disproportionately suppressing the speech of supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro, instead of adopting more restrictive measures to penalize content that incited imminent illegal actions or harassment,” it says.
The Trump administration cites that Moraes' decision to order the suspension of X, in August of last year , after businessman Elon Musk , owner of the platform, refused to appoint a representative to respond for the company in Brazil,"further eroded freedom of the press."
"This broad crackdown blocked Brazilians' access to information and perspectives on a range of national and global issues. Furthermore, the court's temporary ban on VPN use, under penalty of fine, further eroded press freedom by removing privacy protections from individuals whose ability to report government corruption depended on their ability to do so anonymously," it says.
