Vietnam evacuates 300,000 people as Typhoon Kajiki approaches

Sunday, August 24

Vietnamese authorities announced on Sunday that they plan to evacuate more than 300,000 people in connection with the approaching Typhoon Kajiki. More than a dozen domestic flights have already been canceled in the country, TASR reports, citing the AFP news agency.

Tropical storm expected to hit Vietnam's east coast on Monday

More than 325,500 residents in five coastal provinces will move to schools and public buildings that will be converted into temporary evacuation centers, while national carrier Vietnam Airlines and private carrier VietJet announced flight cancellations. The tropical storm is expected to hit Vietnam's east coast on Monday.

Typhoon Kajiki is slowly moving along China's southern coast with maximum sustained winds of 167 kilometers per hour and is expected to intensify further, forecasters said. Extreme torrential rains are expected to hit parts of Vietnam's Ha Tinh and Nghe An provinces on Monday and Tuesday. Strong winds could affect power plants, transport and industries.

Hundreds of people died last year as a result of Typhoon Yagi

It is the fifth tropical storm to hit Vietnam this year, with more than 100 people killed or missing in the first seven months of the year due to natural disasters, with economic losses estimated at around $21 million.

Vietnam suffered economic losses of $3.3 billion in September last year when Typhoon Jagi hit the northern part of the country, killing hundreds of people.

Scientists say that human-caused climate change is leading to more intense and unpredictable weather conditions that could increase the likelihood of devastating floods and storms, especially in tropical regions of the planet.
