The First Chamber of the Federal Supreme Court (STF) decided, on Thursday (11), to sentence former president Jair Bolsonaro and seven other defendants for the coup plot to pay joint and several damages of R$30 million for the damages caused by the vandalism of the headquarters of the Three Powers during the coup acts of January 8.

With the decision, Bolsonaro and the other convicted individuals will have to help pay for the damages caused by the vandalism that occurred at the Supreme Court headquarters, Congress and the Planalto Palace.

Payment must be made after all appeals against the conviction have been completed.

Compensation is one of the consequences of the conviction of those accused of the crimes of armed criminal organization, attempted violent abolition of the Democratic State of Law, coup d'état, damage qualified by violence and serious threat and deterioration of listed heritage.

By a 4-1 vote, the First Chamber convicted former President Jair Bolsonaro of attempted coup d'état and four other crimes, accused of leading a plot to remain in power after the 2022 elections. This is the first time in the country's history that a former president has been punished for this crime.
