Israel agrees to a ceasefire in Gaza; now Hamas must accept it: Trump

Tuesday, July 1

Washington.U.S. President Donald Trump said Tuesday that Israel has agreed to terms for a 60-day ceasefire in Gaza and warned Hamas to accept the deal before conditions worsen.

Trump made the announcement as he prepares to host Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu at the White House on Monday and after Israeli Minister of Strategic Affairs Ron Dermer met with senior U.S. officials in Washington to discuss Gaza and Iran, among other issues.

The US leader increased pressure on the Israeli government and Hamas to negotiate a ceasefire and a hostage-taking agreement to end the war in Gaza.

“My representatives held a long and productive meeting today with the Israelis regarding Gaza. Israel has agreed to the necessary conditions to end the 60-day ceasefire, during which we will work with all parties to end the war,” Trump wrote, stating that the Qataris and Egyptians, as mediators, would present the final proposal.

"I hope, for the sake of the Middle East, that Hamas accepts this agreement, because it won't improve, it will only get worse," he said.
