Liverpool footballer Diogo Jota and his brother Andre Silva have died in a car crash in northwest Spain, police confirmed on Thursday.
Officials said the incident happened “in the municipality of Cernadilla in the province of Zamora” at 12.30am local time.
Police said 28-year-old Jota and his brother, 26, were driving a Lamborghini, which left the road, and no other vehicles were involved. Local reports said firefighters called to the scene found the vehicle engulfed in flames, and an investigation was under way.
Jota, who won the Nations League with Portugal last month, was expected to travel to Hong Kong this month for Liverpool’s clash with AC Milan on July 26. His last goal for the club was in the Merseyside derby at Anfield on April 2, which the Premier League champions won 1-0.
He married partner Rute Cardoso on June 22, and the couple had three children. In a post shared on the couple’s social media, the pair wrote: “Yes, forever.”
Local police said: “The information we have so far is that the car, which was a Lamborghini, was in a road traffic accident and left the road due to a tyre blowout while overtaking.
