Suspect's Motives and Messages

Tyler Robinson has been officially named as a suspect in the Charlie Kirk murder by Utah Governor Spencer Cox. Robinson's family member said the young man had become increasingly political in recent years and that Charlie Kirk's name had been brought up at a family dinner in recent days. The family member said Robinson believed Kirk was full of hate.

Robinson is currently in the Utah County Jail and, while previously described as a college student, Cox said it was important to state that Robinson was not a student at Utah Valley University.

Cox said investigators have identified a person as Robinson's roommate who showed him a Discord conversation he had with the suspect. In it, Robinson wrote about retrieving a rifle wrapped in a towel from a bush. The messages also mentioned engraving the cartridges (previous news reports suggested the perpetrator engraved political messages on the cartridge cases). Cox said the rifle, which was equipped with a scope, was found wrapped in a dark towel.

Photos of Robinson taken during his incarceration were released by the Utah Governor's Office during a press briefing:

The messages found on the sleeves included messages like “Hey Fascists! Shut up,” quotes from the World War II Italian partisan song Bella Ciao, and even one that said “Whoever is reading this is gay.”

“We caught the culprit in 33 hours,” FBI Director Kash Patel proudly announced, before thanking Donald Trump and other members of the political leadership for providing the resources to make the investigation so successful so quickly. Patel also sent a message to Charlie Kirk:

Rest in peace brother, see you in Valhalla.

Governor Spencer Cox then said that authorities haven't had much sleep in recent days, and that he was the most rested person in the room after sleeping 90 minutes last night. In response to a question, he added that authorities believe Robinson acted alone. However, the investigation is ongoing.

Another question related to the messages engraved in the bullet casings, where a Sky News reporter wanted to know how the governor interpreted them. “I’ll leave it to you to interpret what’s written on the casings,” Cox said, but added that he thought the message about fascists spoke for itself.
