TEHRAN, KOMPAS.com - Iran's Foreign Minister, Abbas Araghchi , on Sunday (22/6/2025) announced that he would make an urgent visit to Moscow to meet directly with Russian President Vladimir Putin.

The visit comes amid rising tensions following air strikes by the United States (US) and Israel on Iran's nuclear facilities.

Araghchi said the US attack had crossed a “major red line” and was a serious threat to global stability.

"They crossed a very big red line by attacking Iran's nuclear facilities," Araghchi said on the sidelines of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) meeting held in Istanbul, Turkey, quoted from AFP.

Hours earlier, US President Donald Trump said that American fighter jets had launched strikes on three nuclear sites in Iran.

The strikes came nine days after Israel launched a bombing campaign against Iran's nuclear facilities.

“The most dangerous thing happened last night,” Araghchi said, adding that he did not yet have complete data on the impact of the attack, including on the underground uranium enrichment facility at Fordo.

"I still don't have exact information about the extent of the damage, but I don't think that matters. Last night's attack was a serious crime," he continued.

Iran strongly condemned the US attack on Iran, calling it a serious violation of international law. Araghchi stressed that Iran will defend itself by all means.

“Through this action, the United States has dealt a serious blow to international peace and security,” he said.

“Iran will defend itself by any means necessary against American military aggression,” he said.

Araghchi said he would leave for Moscow on Sunday afternoon and was scheduled to hold a meeting with President Putin on Monday (23/6/2025) morning.

"I will go to Moscow this afternoon to have serious consultations with the Russian president tomorrow," he said.

After the airstrike, President Trump said Iran must now agree to end the war. But Araghchi has balked at pressure to return to the negotiating table.

According to Araghchi, any demands to return to negotiations are no longer relevant.

“The world should not forget that it was the United States that, in the midst of the diplomatic process, betrayed the negotiations by supporting the Israeli regime that is committing genocide and launching an illegal war of aggression against the Iranian nation,” he said.

"We are diplomatic, but we are attacked. They have proven that they are not a party that upholds diplomacy. They only understand the language of threats and violence," he added.

Meanwhile, Turkey, which hosted the OIC meeting last weekend, also expressed concern over the escalation of the conflict, warning that the situation could escalate into a global conflict.

"The ongoing developments could cause regional conflicts to escalate to global levels. We do not want this catastrophic scenario to occur," the Turkish Foreign Ministry said in a statement.
