Protesters begin to gather on Paulista Avenue in São Paulo for a demonstration in defense of amnesty for former president Jair Bolsonaro (PL). They unfurled a United States flag in front of the São Paulo Museum of Art (MASP).
The government of Donald Trump imposed tariffs on Brazilian exports and sanctioned ministers of the Supreme Federal Court (STF) in an attempt to interfere in the trial of the former president.
The demonstration begins at 3pm, but it is already possible to see banners asking the president of the Chamber of Deputies, Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB), to put the project to a vote and that the president of the Senate, Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP), to move forward with the impeachment process of Minister Alexandre de Moraes.
The New Party took to Paulista an inflatable doll with President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva dressed as a prisoner and, next to it, an inflatable egg on which the phrase “You lost, idiot” is written in red.
This is an allusion to Moraes, called an egghead by Bolsonaro supporters, and a criticism of the conviction of hairdresser Débora dos Santos, who used lipstick to spray paint the same phrase on the"Justice" statue on January 8th. She was sentenced to 14 years in prison.
What to expect from the amnesty demonstration on Paulista Avenue
With the motto "React Brazil: Fear is Over," this Sunday's demonstration on Paulista Avenue, the 7th, takes place amid the trial of Bolsonaro and the other defendants in the crucial core of the attempted coup. The Supreme Federal Court (STF) is expected to conclude its analysis of the case on Friday, the 12th.
For the second time in a row, Bolsonaro will not be present as he is serving house arrest after having disregarded precautionary measures determined by the STF.
The main agenda of the demonstration is the approval of amnesty for the former president, the defendants in the coup and those convicted on January 8th.
The governor of São Paulo, Tarcísio de Freitas (Republicanos-SP), made a gesture to Bolsonarism and took the lead in the negotiations in Brasília to move the proposal forward.
Unlike the last event in early August, when he was absent to undergo a medical procedure, Tarcísio has confirmed his presence this Sunday. He will be the main political leader on the platform alongside former First Lady Michelle Bolsonaro (PL).
Also present will be the governors of Minas Gerais, Romeu Zema (Novo), and Santa Catarina, Jorginho Mello (PL), who were not present at the previous event.
The Bolsonarist strategy for this September 7th
The Bolsonaro supporters' strategy is to hold decentralized demonstrations in several Brazilian capitals in the morning and concentrate their efforts and energy in São Paulo in the afternoon.
