Senate Action to End Shutdown

House Response and Congressional Process

The US Democratic Party is unhappy that eight Democratic senators voted on Sunday with Republicans to approve a temporary budget to end the government shutdown.

As Ukrinform reports with reference to Politico, several lawmakers accused Senate Democratic Minority Leader Chuck Schumer of inefficiency and called for his resignation, even though he himself voted against it.

Senator Schumer is no longer effective and must be replaced,” Congressman Ro Hanna said after the vote. “If you can’t lead the fight to stop the skyrocketing cost of insurance, then what are you fighting for?”

After 40 days of fruitless negotiations, eight Democratic senators supported the Republican bill that would end the longest shutdown in US history.

According to some of Schumer's party members, if he were an effective leader, he would be able to unite his faction on the issue of health care.

Senator Chris Murphy said Sunday's bill is a mistake and falls short of what voters expected after Democrats' recent electoral gains."This bill does nothing to stop the health care disaster and in no way limits President Trump's illegal actions," he said.

Democratic National Committee Chairman Ken Martin called the deal a betrayal of the American people, but noted that most Senate Democrats refused to be part of the Republican attack on Americans' health care.

As Ukrinform reported, on Sunday evening the US Senate passed (60 in favor and 40 against) an amended bill passed by the House of Representatives to restore government funding until January 30, 2026.

Under the deal, Republicans agreed to vote in December on extending health care subsidies. The subsidies, which help low-income Americans pay for private health insurance and are set to expire at the end of the year, have been a priority for Democrats in their fight to restore funding. The bill also bars federal agencies from laying off workers through Jan. 30.
