The World's Current Take

The United Nations Secretariat has released the official text of the historic Security Council Resolution 2797 on the Moroccan Sahara, which thwarts Algeria’s attempt to distort the interpretation of this resolution and clearly affirms its responsibility as an active party.

The unprecedented delay in publishing this resolution is attributed to Algeria’s objection to the Arabic translation of the term “parties” as it appeared in the blue document distributed by the American pen holder, and its demand that the Secretariat replace it with “the two parties.”

Algeria’s persistent and intrusive efforts to interfere with the work of the Security Council Secretariat caused a 24-day delay in the publication of the resolution, prompting criticism and condemnation from Security Council members, and speculation and questions from the press and the public who wanted to see the official version of the resolution.

The Algerian maneuver was nothing more than an attempt to distort Resolution 2797 in a desperate effort to evade its direct responsibility for instigating and perpetuating this regional conflict, by insisting to the UN Secretariat that future negotiations be limited to Morocco and the fictitious entity “Polisario”.

After more than three weeks of being blocked by Algeria, the Security Council recognized the right by publishing the resolution in six official languages, referring to “the parties” rather than “the two parties,” thus enshrining the four active parties in the political process, with Algeria being an obvious key party in this regional conflict.

This transparency made possible by the issuance of Resolution 2797 puts a definitive end to Algerian attempts to change the framework established by the Security Council for the political process, and dispels the linguistic ambiguity that seeks to change its wording and standards.

The official text published on the United Nations website confirms, without ambiguity, that Algeria remains a key party in this regional conflict, and that no maneuver or interpretation will be able to obscure this reality, which has been enshrined by the Security Council.
