I just signed the law to make the Epstein file public!, wrote the US president in a long message on his Truth Social network, once again accusing his Democratic opponents of having hidden the truth.

The bill passed by Congress on Tuesday gives the Justice Department one month to release all unclassified documents in its possession concerning the New York financier, who died in prison in 2019 before his trial for sex crimes, his accomplice Ghislaine Maxwell, who is serving a 20-year prison sentence, and all individuals involved in related legal proceedings. Jeffrey Epstein's suicide in his cell has fueled countless conspiracy theories, according to which this financier—with his extensive connections in politics, business, and entertainment—was murdered to prevent embarrassing revelations.

After promising bombshell revelations during the 2024 campaign, Donald Trump has been urging his supporters to turn the page since his return to power, and calls the affair a hoax blown out of proportion by the Democratic opposition.

Recently, he reiterated that he had nothing to do with Jeffrey Epstein, calling him a sick pervert.

Shady Deal

Figures of the New York jet set, the two businessmen were close from the late 1980s until their falling out in the early 2000s. This was before legal proceedings were launched a few years later against the financier, accused of having organized a network for the sexual exploitation of underage girls.

The American president, who has never been charged by the justice system in this case, has for months opposed the proposed law on transparency in the Epstein case.

But on Sunday, when it was becoming clear that the text would be adopted smoothly by Congress, Donald Trump publicly reversed course.

The bill was finally passed Tuesday by a vote of 427 to 1 in the House, and the Senate used a special procedure to approve it unanimously without debate. Earlier, Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer had warned against any manipulation by Donald Trump, calling on him to implement the bill once signed.

New information

The Republican pointed the finger at the opposition. Last week, he ordered his Attorney General, Pam Bondi, to open an investigation into the relationship between the financier and certain Democratic figures, including former President Bill Clinton.

The Department of Justice and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) had announced in July that they had not discovered any evidence on which to base an investigation against people who had not yet been prosecuted in the case.

When questioned by the press about the reason for these new investigations, Pam Bondi stated on Wednesday that they were justified by new information, without specifying what it was. The new law adopted by Congress authorizes the Department of Justice to withhold or redact documents in the case under certain conditions, including to protect the privacy of victims or because of an ongoing federal investigation or prosecution.

Republican Representative Thomas Massie, one of the authors of the bill and a frequent critic of Donald Trump, said he feared that these investigations were a smokescreen and a last-ditch attempt to prevent the release of the Epstein dossier.

He stressed on Wednesday on X that under the terms of his legislation, the authorities could only take refuge behind the excuse of an investigation in a temporary and restricted manner.

Pam Bondi, for her part, stated that her department was respecting the law with maximum transparency, while protecting the victims.
