(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Cha Byeong-seop = At a tourist destination in China, a cable (rope) on a suspension bridge broke, causing the bridge deck to tilt, resulting in 29 casualties.
According to Chinese media outlets Pengpai and Global Times on the 7th (local time), an accident occurred the day before at the Shata tourist site in the Kazakh Autonomous Prefecture of Ili, Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region, where tourists on a bridge fell, killing five people and injuring 24 others.
One witness described the situation at the time:"The steel cable on the right side of the bridge suddenly snapped, causing some people to fall into the river or rocks, trapping several people on the bridge."
One netizen who said he was present at the scene at the time also claimed that the bridge shook as tourists walked on it in the wind.
The bridge where the accident occurred became famous online for its precarious nature. A similar incident occurred here in June of last year, in which tourists fell. At the time, the tourist site reportedly announced plans to strengthen inspections.
The tourist site is currently closed and authorities are investigating the cause of the accident.
Pengpai added that the accident has raised concerns about the safety of provocative tourist facilities such as suspension bridges and glass walkways (paths built on steep cliffs).
