The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, has conveyed this Sunday the idea of a well-armed Ukraine protected by two additional lines of defense, those provided by the international coalition and the process of accession to the European Union, during a visit to the Polish border with Belarus accompanied by the Prime Minister of Poland, Donald Tusk.
Von der Leyen has once again declared Russian President Vladimir Putin a threat who only responds in kind. Over the past 25 years, he has started four wars: Chechnya, Georgia, Crimea, and the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the European Commission President said.
He hasn't changed, and he won't change. He's a predator, he added, referring to the Russian president.
We know from experience that it can only be kept under control through strong deterrence and therefore we must be coordinated, precise and swift in stepping up our defensive posture in the European Union and specifically in the frontline states, he added.
Speaking of lines, Von der Leyen has insisted that Ukraine must receive security guarantees after a hypothetical peace with Russia through three lines of defense, starting with a well-armed military force.
"I often compare it to a steel porcupine that should be indigestible to potential invaders," Von der Leyen added."The second line of defense will be a multinational group, the Coalition of the Willing, with American backing. And the third line of defense is our own defensive posture and the work we are doing to bring Ukraine into the European Union," she specified.
