In the last 24 hours, Donald Trump has been increasing the intensity and speed of his... attack against everything through tariffs, as Friday approaches, which has set a deadline for signing trade agreements with the USA.
As his agreement with the EU is receiving harsh criticism from several European voices, while at the same time keeping the planet in suspense about what he is going to decide regarding tariffs against China, the American president has decided to open a front with India and fire the first warning shot against Russia.
Tariffs against India a message to Moscow
More specifically, Donald Trump announced that the US will impose 25% tariffs on products from India, but also that an additional penalty will be imposed on the country for purchasing weapons and energy from Russia in the midst of the war in Ukraine.
The new tariffs are expected to affect India's exports of goods to the US, which are estimated to be worth about $87 billion in 2024, including products such as apparel, pharmaceuticals, gems and jewelry, as well as petrochemicals.
Although he described Delhi as a friend, Trump criticized India's trade policies through Truth Social and announced the… penalties. Trump's reference to India's relations with Russia comes just 24 hours after the US president gave Moscow a deadline to reach an agreement on Ukraine and threatened that otherwise he would start imposing tariffs on everyone who has economic transactions with it.
Trump also sends a message to China
Trump's list of these countries also includes China, so the discussions in Stockholm, the uncertainty about Trump's decision, and the statements from both sides that followed have special weight.
In this context, and apparently in an effort to preempt developments, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi called for closer cooperation with the United States and warned of any potential confrontations between the two global powers.
China's response to a conference with American companies
Wang made the remarks during a meeting in Beijing with representatives of US companies, including executives from Goldman Sachs, Boeing and Apple. He stressed: China is willing to strengthen cooperation with the US, avoid miscalculations, manage differences and explore possibilities for cooperation. He argued: China and the US should establish more channels of communication and consultation, view each other objectively, rationally and realistically, and cultivate a correct strategic understanding, rejecting unilateral hegemony and bullying tactics.
Prices are rising in the US
In the US, however, the effects of the tariff policy have already begun. In addition to the sting of inflation in June, which rose to 2.7%, companies are announcing price increases, among other things. The latest announcement came from sportswear giant Adidas, which claimed that the tariffs in the second half of the year will increase its costs by 200 million euros.
Sportswear company Adidas warned on Wednesday that it may be forced to raise prices in the United States after saying U.S. tariffs would add about 200 million euros ($231 million) to costs in the second half of the year. The company said it would review its U.S. prices and decide which products to increase once the tariffs are finalized.
