"Putin is ready for peace, for compromise. That was the message conveyed to Trump," one of the sources said.
Kremlin sources have stated that it is not yet clear whether Ukraine would be ready to leave Donbass. The Kremlin emphasizes that if Ukraine does not agree to this condition, the war will continue. It is also unclear whether the United States will recognize the occupied territories as part of Russia.
One source emphasized that although economic issues are secondary to Putin, the dictator understands Russia's economic vulnerability and realizes that continuing the war will require much more resources.
According to Russian sources, Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, played a key role in arranging the Alaska meeting. On August 6, Witkoff made it clear during a meeting with Putin that all sides were ready to compromise, and Putin also outlined the concessions he was willing to make in exchange for peace.
One Kremlin source has expressed the opinion that if Russia and Ukraine can reach an agreement, then various options for a formal peace treaty are possible, such as a trilateral agreement between Russia, Ukraine and the United States, which would later be approved by the UN Security Council.
Another option is to return to the 2022 Istanbul Agreement, which talked about Ukraine's possible neutrality in exchange for security guarantees from five countries - Britain, China, France, Russia, and the United States.
