Trump imposed conditions on Argentina: "If Milei loses the election, we won't be generous."

Tuesday, October 14

Two weeks before the legislative elections, the President of the United States expressed his support for the Argentine president and asserted that Milei's continued presence"is key to maintaining Washington's financial and political support."

In the midst of Javier Milei's official visit to Washington, the president of the United States, Donald Trump, issued a strong warning about the future of bilateral relations and his country's economic support for Argentina.

"If Milei doesn't win the elections and that party, which is far-left and has the philosophy that led Argentina to the problems it is facing, wins again, we will not be generous with the country," said the US president.

The statements came just two weeks before Argentina's legislative elections, in which the ruling party will seek to expand its representation in Congress. Trump once again expressed his personal and political support for Milei, emphasizing that he shares her liberal economic vision and reform plan.

“Milei must win. My advice is for Milei to be strong and follow his principles. There are people who want to make him look bad, even though they know he's right. He has to stick to his principles to win; he's doing the right thing,” the U.S. president said.

Trump's message reinforces the political tone of the summit at the White House, in which both leaders are making progress in signing an “unprecedented” economic and trade agreement, as anticipated by Minister Federico Sturzenegger.

The support of the American president also comes in a context in which the International Monetary Fund (IMF) cut its growth projections for Argentina and raised its estimates of inflation and unemployment, in a scenario where the Argentine Government seeks to consolidate the financial and diplomatic support of the United States.
