Ukraine called a UN Security Council meeting on Friday, Aug. 29, to discuss Russia’s latest mass drone and missile attack on Kyiv.

As per Ukrinform, the emergency meeting will provide an opportunity for the Ukrainian delegation to brief the international community on the fatal attack, which has so far claimed the lives of 23 people, including four children.

The session is scheduled to begin at 10 p.m. Kyiv time (3 p.m. EST).

Ukraine is also expected to call for an immediate ceasefire, among other protections for civilians.

Russian leader Vladimir Putin has consistently dismissed the possibility of a ceasefire. At last week’s bilateral talks between Zelensky and US President Donald Trump in Washington, Trump appeared to have done the same, as per the BBC.

Nevertheless, many European leaders – including German Chancellor Friedrich Merz and French President Emmanuel Macron – remain in favor.

Also on Friday, Presidential Chief of Staff Andriy Yermak and National Security and Defense Council Secretary Rustem Umerov are set to meet with Trump’s special envoy Steve Witkoff in New York.

Speaking to Fox News on Wednesday, Witkoff said that he feels “hopeful” about making progress towards peace between Russia and Ukraine by the end of 2025 or sooner.

“I think we may end up seeing a bilateral meeting,” he added, in what would appear to be a significant climb-down from Trump’s earlier assertion that Putin had agreed to the talks.
