Ukraine is preparing for a high-level meeting between President Volodymyr Zelensky and US President Donald Trump in the US in November, according to National Security and Defense Council Secretary (NSDC) Rustem Umerov.

In a Tuesday social media post, Umerov said Kyiv is coordinating Zelensky’s visit to the US at the earliest opportunity to “complete the final stages and reach an agreement with President Trump” on a wider war settlement.

Zelensky got the 28-point draft deal – later traced to Moscow – on Thursday, prompting intense weekend talks to finalize it as Trump suggested a Thanksgiving (Nov. 27) deadline.

Umerov said Ukrainian and US officials achieved “a shared understanding of the key terms” during recent talks in Geneva, describing the discussions as productive and constructive. He also praised what he called Trump’s “consistent efforts” aimed at bringing Russia’s war to an end.

After the talks, Zelensky said the 28-point plan has been shortened, though he did not detail what was cut.

The leaked 28-point plan proposed territorial concessions, military limits, and a permanent NATO ban, echoing key Kremlin demands.

Umerov added that Kyiv now expects support from its European partners, adding that the Geneva consultations marked an important step toward a coordinated approach.

The remarks came as Ukrainian, US, and European officials wrapped up intensive talks in Geneva, where Kyiv and Washington said they had drafted a “refined peace framework” and made major progress toward a potential deal.

The push comes as Trump has pressed hard for a settlement based on a 28-point plan that sparked anger in Europe for tilting toward Moscow.

European capitals warned the terms would reward aggression. Negotiators spent the weekend rewriting large parts of the proposal, narrowing gaps on the size of the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU), control of the Zaporizhzhia nuclear plant, and prisoner exchanges.

But the biggest issues – territory and Ukraine’s NATO path – would be left for direct talks between Zelensky and Trump, a meeting expected soon.

US negotiators have warned Kyiv that the coming months may be decisive, cautioning that Ukraine could lose more territory if the battlefield situation worsens.

Washington also reportedly presented a separate 10-year security pact modeled on NATO’s Article 5, laying out coordinated support if Russia attacks again.

Zelensky has appealed for unity as the talks accelerate, urging Ukraine’s political class to “stop the bickering” at what officials describe as a critical moment.

If Kyiv and Washington finalize the remaining points – and secure European backing – US officials plan to take the plan to Moscow.
