The murder of Carlos Alberto Manzo Rodríguez, independent mayor of Uruapan, Michoacán, on Saturday night, led President Claudia Sheinbaum Pardo to convene an extraordinary meeting of the security cabinet early yesterday morning, in which actions were outlined to support the state and to ensure that the murder does not go unpunished.

The president condemned “with absolute firmness the vile assassination” of the mayor, who was killed while at the traditional Candle Festival in the main square of the municipality, even though he had federal security protection.

After the meeting, which took place at the National Palace and lasted more than an hour, the president posted a message on her social media accounts detailing that she summoned her security team"to guarantee support for Michoacán and to ensure there is no impunity."

He confirmed that "the territorial commanders of Defense and the National Guard maintained communication with the governor and that he had federal protection."

He indicated that from the moment he became aware of “this serious incident,” he contacted Governor Alfredo Ramírez Bedolla and the federal Secretary of Security and Citizen Protection, Omar García Harfuch. He added that the latter has maintained constant communication with the state prosecutor, Carlos Torres Piña.

The President expressed her condolences to the family and loved ones of Manzo Rodríguez, as well as to the people of Uruapan,"for this irreparable loss."

The mayor of this Michoacán city—the second most populous after the capital, Morelia—has repeatedly called on the federal president and García Harfuch to visit Uruapan to witness firsthand the violence the city routinely faces. He even expressed his hope in video messages that he would not be “just another mayor assassinated.”

Sheinbaum announced yesterday that at 11:00 a.m. the security cabinet would hold a press conference to present progress in the investigations into the crime. “Since the beginning of this administration, we have reinforced the security strategy. These regrettable events motivate us to strengthen it even further. We reaffirm our commitment to dedicate all the State's efforts to achieving peace and security with zero impunity and justice,” she stated.

García Harfuch made the announcement of the extraordinary security cabinet meeting public – early in the morning – on social media.

Shortly before 9 a.m., federal officials began arriving at the National Palace, from where they withdrew around 10 a.m. without making any statements.
