The Lithuanian Foreign Ministry announced on Monday that restrictions at border checkpoints will not affect the transit of Königsberg. President Gitanas Nausėda suggested over the weekend that the possibility of restricting transit should be considered.
His national advisor, David Matulionis, told Žiniu radijas radio on Tuesday that closing the Königsberg transit would be the most difficult and legally complex measure and that it is not being considered at the moment. However, he stressed that this does not mean that it cannot be used in the future.
In Budras's assessment, Lithuania should now prioritize addressing Belarus, first trying to achieve stricter sanctions against Minsk, because the damage caused by the balloons is related"to the actions of Belarus."
It has already been reported that last week, airports in Lithuania were closed four times due to weather balloons used to transport smuggled cigarettes from Belarus, affecting a total of more than 140 flights and more than 20,000 passengers.
Lithuania has temporarily closed the Medininkai and Šalčininkai border checkpoints due to the arrival of weather probes in its airspace. A government decision on the future operation of the two border checkpoints with Belarus is expected on Wednesday.
