US President Donald Trump has called on Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky to accept Russia's terms to end the war, warning him that Vladimir Putin will destroy Ukraine if he does not comply, according to a Financial Times report.

According to the report, last Friday's meeting at the White House turned into a heated confrontation, with sources reporting that there were shouts and insults.

Trump, according to those present, threw aside the maps of the Ukrainian front, asking Zelensky to hand over the entire Donbas to Russia and repeating almost verbatim the arguments that Putin had made in their telephone conversation the previous day.

Despite the tension, Kiev reportedly succeeded in convincing the US president to freeze the current front lines. However, the episode highlighted the instability of Trump's stance on the war and his willingness to adopt some of Russia's demands.

Zelensky had come to the meeting seeking to secure Tomahawk missiles, but Trump refused, focusing on political pressure for a deal with Moscow.

According to a European official briefed on the meeting, Trump told the Ukrainian president that Putin described the war to him as a special operation and warned: If he wants to, he will destroy you.

At one point, he reportedly said in exasperation: Enough with these maps – I don't even know where that red line is.

The Russian president, according to the report, proposed that Kiev cede the territories of Donbas under Ukrainian control in exchange for smaller parts of the Kherson and Zaporizhia regions. This is a smaller demand than the one he had made at the Alaska meeting in August.

For Ukraine, however, the concession of the rest of Donbas is considered unthinkable, as it would constitute a surrender of territories that Russia has failed to seize despite continuous operations since 2022.

The chairman of the Ukrainian parliament's Foreign Affairs Committee, Olexandr Merezhko, stated that Putin is attempting to cause division in Ukraine and undermine our unity.

Trump's stance disappointed Ukraine's European allies, who had hoped for increased American support.

Zelensky was very negative after the meeting, a European official said, adding that Europe's leaders are not optimistic but remain realistic about the next steps.

In a statement on Sunday, Zelensky called on the United States, Europe, and the G20 and G7 countries to take decisive steps to end the war.

Trump and Putin have agreed to hold a new summit on the war in Ukraine within the next two weeks, in Budapest.
